The Department of Law of the Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance of the University of Luxembourg is looking for a PhD candidate to conduct research in Law.

The doctoral researcher will be working under the supervision of Professor Stefan Braum. The candidate is part of a research project focusing on the development of the rule of law and good governance in a country of the Global South.

The research subject therefore touches on topics such as human rights and their intercultural context, access to justice and / or social justice The thesis work will be undertaken at the University of Luxembourg but can also be jointly-supervised with another university.

The suggested theme of the PhD is Building Rule of Law Institutions in countries of the Global South. The candidate is, however, welcome to suggest any other topic within the overarching project theme.

The doctoral candidate will contribute to the teaching of classes ranging from one to three hours per week, of small group teachings and tutorials.

He or she is also supposed to conduct field research in the project’s reference country (Laos).

The doctoral researcher will benefit from being part of large research group comprising several PhDs and Postdoctoral Researchers working on related topics of Human Rights, Criminal Law, Social Justice.

Being part of the project will allow the doctoral researcher to enhance his / her knowledge-base and experience; working on the various aspects of the project will not only strengthen his / her academic profile, but also give him / her access to (and the chance to critically engage with) some of the most renowned experts in the field.

We are looking for a candidate with demonstrated interest in Human Rights, International Law or Criminal Law. In particular, the following requirements apply :

  • A Master’s Degree in Law
  • Have the linguistic skills to evolve in a multilingual environment : fluency in either English or French, good understanding of the second language and possibly a third language, German in particular, will be considered an advantage
  • Excellent communication and writing skills
