How will you contribute?
Join us for building the next generation of semiconductor quantum chips!
You will be part of the LIST Materials Research and Technology department, where you will carry out your work in the Quantum Materials Group, led by Dr. Florian Kaiser.
Within our ERC Consolidator Project “Q-Chip”, you will help us to answer a fundamental key question in quantum technology :
how can we combine individual demonstrator experiments to implement real-world applications?
You will solve this issue by developing a Quantum System-on-Chip, which uses colour centre quantum systems within an industrial semiconductor material : silicon carbide.
Like a classical System-on-Chip, it will integrate separated processing and memory units, which communicate with photon-mediated entanglement. This milestone experiment will kickstart the development of both, the quantum internet and distributed quantum computing.
The objectives of this PhD thesis project are :
(a) Demonstrate spin-photon entanglement with single colour centres in silicon carbide. This comprises learning to set up and operate our new optical cryostat platform, which involves advanced confocal microscopy, laser pulse shaping, and time-bin interferometry.
(b) You will benefit from our activities on fibre-coupled quantum photonic chips in semiconductor silicon carbide, which leads to high-efficiency operation. This will allow you to implement new laser pulse excitation schemes, such as SUPER. And it also allows you to operate multiple silicon carbide quantum systems in parallel, for the first time.
(c) The final step is to demonstrate on-chip entanglement among two colour centres based on photonic interference, which will unlock the full scalability potential of our platform.
Overall, this PhD thesis project will initiate disruptive breakthroughs towards scalable quantum technologies based on industrial semiconductors.
